It was the statement by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the 8th meeting of the National Committee on Climate Change (CC) held on the morning of May 18.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc spoke at the meeting
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that Vietnam is one of the countries which are under direct and severe impacts by climate change. Over the past time, the Government has carried out 3 comprehensive solutions related to investment, policies and capacity building in response to climate change; however, these efforts are not enough.
Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the role of the Advisory Council of the National Committee for Climate Change with the participation of professional and decisive experts in policy review. Besides, propaganda must be promoted so that all Ministries, authorities and people are well aware of the impacts of climate change and response measures. In propaganda, both risks and opportunities need to be addressed, so that governments and citizens can adapt and take advantage of opportunities brought about by climate change.
Emphasizing the impacts of climate change on the Mekong River Delta, the PM also suggested that the master plan should be studied and adjusted, first of all in the Mekong River Delta, the Central Coast, some of the important and urgent works,
Meanwhile, in the remaining months of this year, the Prime Minister requested ministries, sectors and localities to develop specific plans and implement the tasks assigned under the Paris COP 21 climate agreement. The plan should integrate climate change responses and by October 31, 2017, the relevant ministries will have reported implementation status to the Office of the National Committee for Climate Change.
Regarding the capital to cope with climate change, it is known that Vietnam needs resources of up to 30 billion USD. The PM noted that the Commission should promote international cooperation and ODA mobilization programs; draw lessons from international climate change adaptation to apply to Vietnam.
